Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $25 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

This is a Czech-made sample imported by Knilling. Old stock, but actually a new instrument that needed the center seam of the back reglued. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition. I see no cracks or repaired cracks; however you can see where part of the back center seam has been reglued. This is a solid repair, but could look nicer. Top is medium to fine grain spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a full, bright tone quality. Well rounded and suitable for all styles of music.

Does not include case or bow.

Kurt Wittelsbach, Made in West Germany, ca. 1987. This wonderful instrument features ebony pegs, ebony fingerboard, ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners, plastic chinrest, and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition, with numerous dents, dings and scratches overall. There is moderate wear to the edges. There is a tiny, 1/8" tight saddle crack in the top over the block. No other cracks or repaired cracks. Top is very even, fine-grained spruce, with a nicely flamed maple back, sides and neck. The neck is slightly more narrow at the nut, so string spacing is better suited to smaller hands. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a bright, clear tone quality. Great for bluegrass, Irish or folk.

Includes older used case and bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $425
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 1468

Don't let the looks of this one fool you! This German fiddle will make a great starting or step-up instrument for any beginner! Made in Dresden, Germany, ca. 1900-1920. It features vintage geared pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-3/16", with an overall length of 23-3/4".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is very worn! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with heavy edge wear. Lots of wear overall. I see only two cracks in the top, and both have been repaired. One is a 1/4" hairline wing crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole. The other is a repaired 2" crack extending downward from the same f-hole but on the opposite side near the bridge. There are quite a few other lines and scratches in the varnish that resemble cracks, but they are not. There appears to be two cracks in the peghead, which is why there are geared pegs. These are solid and stable (they do not extend to the edge of the pegbox) and will be fine as long as geared pegs are kept on this instrument. I believe both the top and back have been reglued on this instrument. Everything is solid and this instrument is guaranteed ready to play. It is a great deal for someone wanting a reasonably priced vintage instrument that plays easily! It is stamped "VUILLAUME A PARIS" on the back. This is NOT a French fiddle, but is German. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. Responsive and easy to play! Highly recommended in this price range for a vintage instrument!

Does not include case & bow.

Vintage Czech Violin/Fiddle $575
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 727

Vintage Czech, ca. 1920, from the Schoenbach region. This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-3/8".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, though it does have a lot of chips, dents, dings and scratches. Moderate to heavy wear on the edges. There are two well-repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired saddle crack on the treble side that is about 3-1/2" long, and a repaired 2-1/2 crack to the left of the fingerboard. No other cracks or repaired cracks. One corner of the top on the bass side has been chipped and is missing. This will not affect the tone or playability of the instrument. Instrument is solid and ready to play! Nice flaming on the maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume. It has a bright, clear tone quality.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $575
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 1352

Vintage German, C. Meisel, ca. 1950-1960. Great sounding instrument! This one features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/4", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in fair to good condition, though it does have a lot of chips, dents, dings and scratches. Moderate to heavy wear on the edges. There is a worn spot in the top to the right of the tailpiece. I believe this is from the bow inside the case hitting this area of the instrument with no protection. See Pic 2. Cosmetically not very nice, but this doesn't affect the stability or playability of the instrument. I see five repaired cracks in the top, including two 1/4" wing cracks (one on each side), a repaired 2" soundpost crack, a repaired 3-1/4" crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole, and a 4-3/4" repaired crack extending downward from the same f-hole. Parts of the top and back have also been reglued at some point in time. One of the corners is chipped. See Pic 1. Top is medium grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a full, bright and clear tone quality. Decent bass end, and even across all strings. Reponsive. Great for bluegrass, country or Irish music!

Does not include case or bow.

There is a small chip on the top of the scroll. See pictures. Ribs at the end have been reglued to the block, and the neck has been reglued at some point in time. Neck angle is slightly low, so this instrument has been set up with a 3/4 bridge with normal 4/4 spacing. Instrument has been completely setup and is ready to play! Top is fine grain spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a moderately bright and clear tone quality. Good bass end, but not bassy overall. Great for bluegrass or Irish music! Really good deal on this instrument!

Overall condition is excellent. This is a nicely made instrument similar to Robert Dolling. Instrument has been completely refinished. This is a nicely made instrument from the "Meisterwerkstatten" (Master) line of GEWA. It was made in Mittenwald, Germany, in the Adorf Workshop. What an incredible instrument all around! It features ebony pegs with Parisian eye; ebony fingerboard; fancy inlaid ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and upgraded Prelude strings. The body is 14", with an overall length of 23".

I would classify this instrument as loud in volume with a wonderful depth! More of a bassy tone quality without being overpowering! Even across all strings. One of my absolute favorites! Easy to play and very responsive. This would be good for any style of music. Please note: This instrument is on consignment from another violin shop and is not eligible for trade-in or return.

INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 3467

Vintage Lyon & Healy, ca. 1919. Tag says "The Lyon & Healy, Student Violin, Chicago, AD 1919, Style 1025." Lyon & Healy was based in Chicago, but their violins were made in Germany and France. Based on the scroll shape, I think this is probably from France. Beautiful Maggini copy (double purfling but no extra turn in the scroll). This one features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in very good condition with dents, dings and scratches overall. I see a very well repaired 2-1/2" crack in the top to the right of the tailpiece (see Pic 2), and a tiny pressure crack from bending one of the ribs when the instrument was originally made (see Pic 1). I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Light wear to the edges. Top is very even, fine-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are lightly flamed maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a full, deeper tone quality. This would be good for any style of music. It is both a beautiful looking and sounding instrument!
