Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $45 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

Vintage Czech Violin/Fiddle $450
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 4304

Vintage Czech, ca. 1920's. Great tone! It's not that often that we can offer such a great tone in a vintage instrument for this price! This one features ebony pegs; dyed hardwood fingerboard; vintage ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; vintage chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-3/4".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition with numerous dents, dings and scratches overall. There is a 3" repaired saddle crack in the top (under the chinrest -- See Pic 1). It is not completely level, but it is a stable repair. There is a repaired 3/4" crack in one of the ribs. See Pic 2. There is a scratch in the wood on the A peghole. I do not believe it is a crack, and it is tight and does not interfere with tuning or the peg holding. See Pic 3. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. Top is medium-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a great bluegrassy sound. Even across all strings! Smooth playing! Great tone for the price! Highly recommended in this price range!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage American Violin/Fiddle $475
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 4299

Vintage American fiddle that sounds really great! No tag or handwriting on the inside, so there is no way to know exactly when or who made this instrument. I would guess it is around 100 years old. This one features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and Prelude steel strings. The body is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is okay. Original varnish is in okay to poor condition with heat damage, dents, dings and scratches overall. There are numberous well repaired cracks in the top, but I don't see cracks anywhere else. The cracks in the top have been both glued and cleated and the instrument is solid. The repaired cracks include a 7-1/2" crack that runs from the top of the treble f-hole to the bottom edge of the fiddle; a 6" crack that runs from the top of the bass f-hole to the top of the fiddle; a 5-1/4" crack that runs from the bottom of the bass f-hole to the bottom edge of the fiddle; and a 1/2" wing crack on the bass f-hole. There are also a couple of patches. See pictures. There is a fingerboard wedge to correct low neck angle. Top is medium to wide-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are nicely flamed maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a slightly warmer, smooth sound. Easy to play! Really sounds great! Instrument is solid, setup, and ready to play!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage 7/8 Scale German Violin/Fiddle $725
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 890

Vintage German, ca. 1890-1900. This instrument is a 7/8 scale - so not quite full size, and perfect for smaller hands! This one features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; composite tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and Prelude steel strings. The body is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is okay. Original varnish is in okay condition with lots of wear, dings and scratches. The scroll has been revarnished (with scratches visible), but I believe the rest of the instrument has its original varnish. The button has been repaired; and the back has been reglued and is not flat at the center seam. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. Top is fine-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are flamed maple. I would classify this one as loud to very loud in volume. Vintage American Violin/Fiddle $975
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 4558

This is quite the find! This American fiddle has its original handwritten tag inside! Made by Lucille Amanda Tewell, March 1972, in the Gault School of Violin Making, Washington DC. It is a very unique shape, with large arches and very pointed corners. Absolutely beautiful wood on the back and sides! This one features geared Perfection Pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 13-7/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition with virtually no dents, dings and scratches overall; however, the varnish itself was left a little unfinished--like the final rub out was not done. It is a beautiful, glossy golden color! There is a small crack at the A peghole that has been glued, and the pegs were replaced with geared Perfection Pegs, so there will be no problems with slipping or additional cracking in this area. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. Top is medium to fine-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are beautifully figured maple. I believe the nut, saddle and half of the button are plastic, and I left these, as they are original to the instrument and are rather unique! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderately bright tone quality. This would be a great player or great for your American fiddle collection! Don't let this one pass you by! Highly recommended!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage JTL French, ca. 1920. Great deal on a French instrument! This one features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14", with an overall length of 23".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in very good condition with dents, dings and scratches overall. There is a 3-1/4" repaired crack in the top extending upwards from the treble f-hole. There is also a repaired 4-1/2" crack in the top under the chinrest that extends from the bottom edge to the bass f-hole. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. Top is medium to wide-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. Purfling is etched. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderate all around tone quality. Even across all strings! Neck is slightly more narrow at the nut, making this more ideal for smaller fingers. Great for all styles of music! Great price!
