Full Size Violins / Fiddles

(We have all sizes! Contact us for Smaller Sizes!)

Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 200 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Our vintage fiddles start at $200.

We do carry new cases (starting at $40 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $15 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

4/4 Vintage Czech Violin/Fiddle $535 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 551

Another great student or intermediate instrument! Nice looking and nice sounding. Circa early 1900's. Dyed rosewood fingerboard, ebony pegs; new wooden chinrest; new Wittner tailpiece with four built-in fine tuners; new bridge; Super Sensitive Red Label strings.

This is a VERY easy to play instrument. Close grained spruce top has a slight wave to it on the upper bouts. There is one small crack (about 1") on the upper right bout that is cross-grain. It appears to be a flaw in the wood. You can see it in the pictures. There are two other repaired cracks that are very hard to see. One on each side of the tailpiece on the top. Neither are soundpost or bass bar cracks. Original finish is great condition. Scratches under the bridge and tailpiece, but hardly any other scratches or dings overall. Beautiful, lightly flamed back, and very pretty scroll. Medium to loud in volume with a nice tone quality suitable to all styles of music.

4/4 Vintage Left-Handed Violin/Fiddle $950 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 599

Here is the first of its kind that I've ever seen, though I'm sure there are more... This is a left-handed fiddle made in the early 1800's. Yes, it was built that way with the bass bar on the opposite side. It has the old style neck block that is attached to the neck with the ribs inserted into the block. It also has the baroque neck, though we positioned the new fingerboard and the nut so that the scale would be standard. New ebony fingerboard; new ebony nut; new ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest (Right-handed, because it came without one and I don't have a left-handed chinrest. This is a flat chinrest so will hopefully work okay for a lefty.); new bridge; new fancy ebony pegs; Super Sensitive Red Label strings. It has the original varnish, which is dark brown, and also has been touched up with several different colors. It has not been stripped or refinished. Beechwood neck with a very unique scroll curl.

The back has a geometrical design that has been painted on. The purfling is also painted, but is very fine and beautifully detailed. It is stamped "GOFF" and "LONDON" on the back near the button. (See pictures.) This has been rebushed to fit the new pegs. There are two well-repaired cracks on the right-hand side of the top. Not bass bar cracks. There are also several rib cracks on the left side ribs. I do not know if/how these were repaired, though they seem to be stable. There is also a picture for you to see this. I looked inside but was not able to see this part of the fiddle through the endpin hole or the f holes. There is a 1" crack in the rib on the end. It appears to be fixed as well. NICE bass sound!!!! This is a rare opportunity for a left-handed fiddle player to get a great sounding, vintage, left-handed fiddle!

Please understand I am not left-handed and it really was something for me to get ANY soundclip recorded for this fiddle. I believe an actual left-handed fiddler would be able to make this fiddle sound better than my soundclip.

4/4 Wm Lewis & Sons Violin/Fiddle $125 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 566

Great student instrument! This one even has the "Don't Fret" decal (which can be easily removed if desired) already applied to the fingerboard! I would estimate this instrument is 5-10 years old. It has a Wm Lewis & Sons label inside with handwritten Model #1002 and serial number.

This instrument is in great condition. There are no cracks or repaired cracks. The neck has been pinned at the heel with the correct angle. Excellent setup with Prim strings, ebony pegs, ebony fingerboard, ebony chinrest, metal tailpiece with four fine tuners, original bridge. Practically no scratches or dings. Light flaming on the back. Beautiful close grain spruce top. Inlaid purfling. Light brown in color. Medium loud volume with a nice, overall tone quality for any style of playing. You can't beat this one for the price, sound and playability!

4/4 Vintage Black Stainer Copy Violin/Fiddle $435 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 535

This is one of my favorites in this price range. Original finish is in excellent condition and has darkened to dark red to black from age. One piece back, too! Markeneukirchen, Germany. Circa 1890. Stainer copy. Dyed rosewood fingerboard; new ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; new bridge; new plastic chinrest; Dominant strings; and complete with a large rattlesnake rattle inside. (It was a wive's tale that the rattles made the fiddles sound better! This can be easily removed if desired.)

This is one of the loudest instruments we have, making it ideal for bluegrass. It's a looker, too! Very few scratches or dings. Only one repaired crack on the top to the right of the tailpiece about 2-1/2" long. No other cracks or repairs. Nice arching; nice one-piece back. You'll really like this one.

4/4 German Vintage Violin $335 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 558

German, circa 1890. Ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with bone inlay and four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; vintage Dresden bridge; Super Sensitive Red Label strings. Finish is original on this one but has heavy french polish or overcoating applied for a smooth, sleek look.

The overall condition of the instrument is excellent. There is one nicely repaired crack that comes from under the tailpiece that is about 3" long. No other cracks or repairs. There are many nicks and scratches that were purposely added when this instrument was finished to give it an antiqued look. They are apparent all over the instrument, including the scroll. This is such a cool looking instrument!!! Bright sound; medium loud in volume. You'll have a hard time beating the price of this instrument.

4/4 German Vintage Violin $425 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 598

Dresden, German, circa 1890. Sweet tone quality, nice for classical or folk. Ebony fingerboard; new ebony pegs; new plastic chinrest; new ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; new bridge; Super Sensitive Red Label strings. Nice, thin neck makes this one easy on the left hand.

Overall condition of this instrument is good. It has a repaired crack that runs the entire length of the right hand side of the instrument, and another that runs the complete lower bout of the back. Both were expertly repaired, and the finish was touched up so well that matches the original finish wonderfully! Tiny dent in the rib where it meets the neck on one side. All cosmetic in nature. No bass bar or soundpost cracks. No other cracks or repaired cracks. Dings and scratches consistant with age. This is your chance to get a nice sounding, vintage German fiddle! Medium in volume. Smooth playing.

4/4 German Vintage Violin $485 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 561

Beautiful, unusually long scroll on this very old fiddle. Circa 1870. Markeneukirchen, Germany. Vintage pegs with pearl dot inlays; new ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; new ebony chinrest; new bridge; Super Sensitive Red Label strings; dyed fingerboard; original finish has been overcoated but not removed or stripped. This fiddle is not suitable for a petite person. It has wide fingerboard and slightly thicker neck, making it ideal for someone with large or fat fingers.

Overall condition of this instrument is very good. One small repaired crack in the rib on the end of the fiddle. It is about 1" long and is completely supported by the end block. There is also a chip out of the side of the top that is about 1" long. It goes up to the purfling and is flush with the ribs. Cosmetic in nature, though someone could get this fixed if desired. There is also a tiny 1/4" crack from the left f hole to the purfling. No other cracks or repaired cracks. Nicely flamed back and sides, and I just love the long scroll!! Loud to medium loud instrument; good for bluegrass music!

4/4 German Vintage Violin $850 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference No. 596

This is one that I don't expect to last long! It has it all. A nice, deep tone quality; beautiful flamed maple sides and one-piece back; vintage inlayed tailpiece; very easy to play. Made in Klingenthal, Germany, circa 1870. It has rosewood tuning pegs; four fine tuners; Pirastro Chromcor strings; dyed fingerboard; plastic chinrest; dot inlayed endpin; ebony inlay on top of bridge (to keep strings from digging into the bridge).

The overall condition of the instrument is excellent. There is one repaired crack on the top to the left of the tailpiece. It is about 3" long. Not a bass bar crack. The edge on the top left-hand side has a cosmetic repair to it. One tiny piece of the right f-hole is missing. No other cracks or repairs. Original finish is in great condition. Scratches and dings under the tailpiece and bridge and on the back. Overall, light scratching and dings consistant with age. I would rate this instrument medium in volume. It has that great bassy sound that everyone is looking for.

4/4 Vintage Maggini Violin / Fiddle - $850.00 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference mag18-24

Here is a wonderful fiddle for someone who wants it all! This one has the looks, the style, and the sound! It is a German Maggini copy, which means that it has double inlayed purfling all around the front and back, and an extra turn in the scroll. The fingerboard and chinrest are rosewood, it has a metal tailpiece with four built-in fine tuners, ebony pegs, Helicore strings, and a Bausch bridge. Circa 1920, Germany.

The overall condition of this violin is very good. It has no seam separations, no cracks or repaired cracks. There is a very slight bit of rib warp at the bottom near the endpin. It looks like this was repaired some time ago and is stable. The finish is original and in good condition, with some scratches and dings that are consistant with age. There are some dark lines in the wood on the back, but these are not cracks. They are just dark grain marks in the wood.

This particular instrument has a deeper than normal tone quality and would be suitable for any type of music. It is medium to loud in volume, and plays easily.

Old, but serviceable case.

4/4 Vintage German Violin / Fiddle - $850.00 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference mar10-17

This is another fiddle with a little deeper tone quality to it. Nothing harsh or tinny here! It features a new ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners, ebony fingerboard, new Super Sensitive Red Label strings, new plastic chinrest, new bridge, and ebony pegs. There is a label that someone glued inside that says "Saxony," but that is incorrect. Circa 1890 from either Markeneukirchen or Nuremburg Germany.

The overall condition of this violin is good. It has no seam separations, and six repaired cracks in the top. There is a repaired crack directly under the tailpiece, a 1/4" wing crack, a 1/4" saddle crack, and 1-1/2" crack extending from the top of the f hole on the left side, and two cracks on the left upper top that are 1" and 3". Again, all of these have been repaired and are purely cosmetic. No bass bar or sound post cracks. The finish is original and is in fairly good condition with some scratches and dings overall. There is a worn spot in the finish on the upper right side which is visible in the pictures. There is a small chip on the side of the scroll, and a small notch in the button, both of which are visible in the pictures. The neck has not been loose or reset.

This instrument has nice volume, a slightly deeper tone quality, and very pleasant sound.

Old, but serviceable case.

4/4 Vintage Grafted Violin / Fiddle - $825.00 - FREE Shipping/Insurance (US only)
Reference fgr7-13

If you're looking for a very old fiddle with a good tone, here it is. This particular one is from around 1830 and has a very nicely grafted scroll. It is setup with Dominant strings, ebony pegs - three have pearl dots and one does not, ebony fingerboard, wittner tailpiece with built-in fine tuners, and a new plastic chinrest. Most likely Bohemian. Overall length is 23-1/4".

The overall condition of this violin is fair to good. It has no seam separations, but lots of old repaired cracks in the top. None are bassbar or soundpost cracks and all look to have been professionally repaired. One of the f holes has a small piece missing. There are two very small cracks on the back to the right the button. They are both less than 1/8" and run from the edge to the purfling. There is a small crack that runs through the ribs by the endpin. There is one repaired rib crack that is visible in the "heel" picture. There is one other rib crack in the C-bout, but it is tight and held in place by the lining. The grafted scroll has been beautifully done. It has been refinished, but in years past. Some scratches and dings overall, but considering its age, this instrument in doing just fine. It has a very nice tone quality. Suitable for any style of music. Medium to loud in volume. Although I consider this instrument better than student quality, it would make a suitable student instrument because it has such a great tone quality it would be hard to make it sound bad.

Old, but serviceable case.

Wide grain spruce top, even all the way the across. Ebony fingerboard, pegs, tailpiece and chinrest. New Super Sensitive Red Label strings. Overall length is 23-1/4". Circa 1890.

The overall condition of this violin is very good. It has no seam separations and no cracks or repaired cracks. The original finish is in good condition, with scratches and dings that would be considered normal for the age. This is a great sounding fiddle for any style or application. It is medium to loud in volume, with a very pleasant tone quality.

Reference C37-43

This nice student violin has one of tightest grained spruce tops I've ever seen. Completely even all the way across. Original varnish, which is slightly unique in color with a tan/brown sunburst type finish. Slight flaming on back. Ebony pegs, rosewood fingerboard, ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners, new plastic chinrest, new bridge, new Super Sensitive Red Label strings. Overall length is 23". Circa 1920.

The overall structural condition of this violin is great. It has no seam separations and no cracks or repaired cracks. The neck angle was low when we originally got this instrument, but it has been corrected by resetting the neck. The finish has numerous scratches and dings overall, with some handwriting that is apparent through slight indentations in the wood on the back. It is not obvious unless you hold the instrument to the light and look for it, so this is not obvious in the pictures. This is a loud fiddle with a bite. Would make a great bluegrass or country instrument, but probably not a good classical instrument.

Old, but serviceable case. No bow.

This is the only one of its kind that we have right now. It is an older, German instrument which was revarnished many years ago with a decal added to the back at that time (under the varnish). It is not apparent at all that the instrument was revarnished, though it certainly doesn't look its age, which is circa 1880. It is in very good condition. It has inlaid purfling, wood chinrest, ebony fingerboard, new hybrid ebony pegs with pearl dots, new metal tailpiece w/4 built-in fine tuners, new bridge, new Super Sensitive strings. Nice one-piece tiger grain maple back. Made in Klingenthal or Markneukirchen, Germany, circa 1880.

The overall condition of this violin is very good. It has no seam separations and just one small wing crack. There are very few scratches and dings overall, with light wear along the edges. There is some light varnish crackling. All of this is minor and does not affect the playability or tone quality of the instrument. Overall length 23-1/2".

This is a very inexpensive replacement bow for student violin outfits. Not necessarily what I recommend, but they are inexpensive and they will get the job done for beginners. If you are purchasing a vintage violin and need a cheap bow, this is it. If you own a student violin outfit and the bow has become warped or broken, this is a comparable replacement. Round brazilwood stick, rosewood frog, steel winding, real horsehair.
