Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $25 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

Vintage American Violin/Fiddle $245

Reference No. 2792

This instrument was made in Ohio by the Jackson Guldane Company, circa 1950. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 13-7/8", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition with a good number of scratches, dents and dings overall. This instrument is not typical for Jackson Guldane. It does not have the one-piece side that is typically found on these instruments, nor does it have any purfling. Top is fine-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are lightly flamed maple. It has a Jackson Guldane stamp on the back. I don't see any cracks, but it does look like the back end has been reglued. This instrument has been set up with a 3/4 bridge to accommodate a slightly low neck angle. Nice, thin neck makes is easy to play! I would classify this one as loud to very loud in volume, with a bright tone quality. Tone is clear and cutting, making this instrument ideal for jamming in acoustic settings. Great for bluegrass music.

Does not include case or bow.

This is a fantastic deal on a good looking and sounding instrument! It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition with very few scratches or dings overall. There is one large 2" scratch, which is on the back of the instrument. It is not all the way through the varnish and does not affect the instrument in any way other than cosmetic. See Pic 1. One of the corners of the top is chipped. See Pic 2. See Pic 2. Top is wide-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this instrument as loud in volume with a full, clear tone quality. Moderately bright and very responsive. Really great tone quality for an inexpensive instrument! Good for bluegrass, Irish or folk music.

Includes used ABS case and student bow.

Beautiful wood grain, and nice, warm tone quality! It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/8".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition with very few scratches or dings overall. One touched up spot in the varnish on the side. See Pic 1. Fine-grained spruce top, with a beautifully flamed maple back, sides and neck. Slightly fluted f-holes and ebony button cap. I don't know the age on this one, but maybe 10-20 years old? No cracks or repaired cracks. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a warm, full tone quality. Very nice sound! Great for all styles of music.

Includes used case and student bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $320

Reference No. 2010

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, but there is lots of wear, especially under the bridge and on the sides of the scroll. Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with quite a bit of edge wear. There is a 4" repaired crack in the back, and there has been some work done to the button area. The button is intact, but there is a small gap in the seam. Two of the corners on the top are slightly chipped. See Pic 1. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a slightly edgy, bright tone quality. Great student instrument for a fantastic price! Good for bluegrass, country and Irish!

Does not include case & bow.

Beautiful glossy varnish and a tightly flamed maple back make this one a real stand-out! It features ebony pegs with Parisian eye; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with Parisian eye and four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition, with viritually no dents, dings or scratches. No cracks or repaired cracks. Medium to fine-grained spruce top, with tightly flamed maple back, sides and neck. Nicely carved f-holes. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. Bass end is nice, though I would classify this one as bassy overall. Well suited for bluegrass, folk or country. Great deal on a beautiful, used instrument!

This is an amazing sounding instrument, and it looks just as good as it sounds! Recently purchased and probably less than 10 years old.

The only crack I see is a repaired 1/4" wing crack on the treble f-hole. Nicely grained spruce top, and an incredible one-piece flamed maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a deep, bassy tone quality. Very warm and sweet, forgiving tone. Even across all strings. Wonderful for any style of music, and this one comes with a used case & bow!

Vintage Kit Violin/Fiddle $395

Reference No. 1685

This unusual instrument is not exceptionally pretty, but it sure sounds fantastic! It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

I believe this is a kit instrument that someone put together and varnished. No date, but there is writing in ink on the inside that says Rebuilt by Joe Martin, Kansas City, KS. Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, but is not well done. Top and back don't look too bad, but are kind of blotchy. The sides and scroll have runs on them in several places. See Pic 1 through Pic 3. I see one repaired saddle crack that is 2" in length on the top. The top is made from wide to medium-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a deep, more bassy tone quality. Fairly even across all strings, and well-rounded. This really has a wonderful tone quality, and I believe it will open up more as it is played. I wish I knew more about it. Good for all styles of music!

Does not include case or bow.

Here is another wonderful sounding, vintage instrument! Made in Germany and imported by William Lewis & Son. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in okay condition with lots of wear, dents, dings and scratches. There is a well repaired 7" crack in the top that runs from the saddle to the top of the treble f-hole. There is another 3" repaired crack that extends upwards from the same f-hole. There is a 4-1/2" repaired crack in the top that goes from the edge under the chinrest all the way to the bottom of the bass f-hole. The ribs have a repaired crack at the endblock. See End picture. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. This was probably a school instrument at some point in time, as the number "18" is scratched in the button. See Heel picture. The varnish is completely worn in the center on the ribs on the treble C bout. See Pic 1. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a bright, clear tone quality. Not harsh or tinny. Really great sound for bluegrass! Easy to play and responsive!

Does not include case or bow.

Nice German instrument here, circa 1900. Beautifully flamed maple back! It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. The original varnish is in fair condition on the top (with lots of scratches, dents and dings), and in very good condition on the back. Beautiful flaming on the maple back and sides. Top is medium to fine-grained spruce. There are several repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired 3-1/2" saddle crack to the right of the tailpiece, and a repaired 7" crack directly under the the tailpiece, which is solid but ugly. The edges are not quite matched up. See Pic 1. There is also a repaired 3" crack in the top to the left of the fingerboard that goes from the edge downward, and a repaired 2-1/2" crack on the treble edge of the top, lower bout. There is a solid repair to the button on the back, and it does look like the neck has been reset. I believe the back and top have been removed and reglued at some point in time. There is a tiny dimple in the fingerboard, completely cosmetic in nature. See Pic 2. I have also photographed several other cosmetic flaws in Pic 3 & Pic 4. Instrument is solid and guaranteed ready to play. Nice bassbar inside. Well-balanced instrument and even across all strings. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. It is not harsh, and the E string is well-balanced to the rest of the instrument (not standing out). This would be a great student or step-up instrument, and I believe it would be suited for all styles of music. It is a beautiful instrument!

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is very worn! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with heavy edge wear. There is a 1" repaired crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a crease in the ribs which would be original to the instrument when the sides were bent. See Pic 1. There is a tiny chip on one side of the scroll. See Pic 2. Please note that the striping on this instrument is not in the wood, but was done with flames (a common way of mimicking maple flaming during the time period this was made). I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. There is some warmth to the bass end, and it is fairly even across all strings. Good for bluegrass!

Does not include case & bow.

Nice student instrument, Stainer copy, made in Germany around 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 24".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is completely intact, but there is lots of wear! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with quite a bit of edge wear. There are a few chips in the scroll around a couple of the pegholes, but nothing that affects the integrity. See Scroll picture. There is a 3" repaired crack in the rib at the endblock. See End picture. Two of the corners of the top are chipped. See Pic 1. There is a 2" repaired soundpost crack in the top. See Pic 2. There is a 1" repaired crack in the rib to the right of the endblock. See End picture. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Instrument is solid and ready to play. Lightly flamed maple back, sides and scroll, and wide to fine-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a clear, bright tone quality. Good for bluegrass and Irish!

Nicely antiqued German instrument with a one-piece maple back! Circa 1930-40. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; metal tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-3/16", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition. There are a number of dents, dings and scratches overall, but it is hard to tell which ones are from wear and which ones are original to the antiqued varnish. It is a great looking, vintage instrument with a nice patina. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. Top is medium to wide-grained spruce, and it has a lightly flamed one-piece maple back, sides and neck. I would classify this one as medium in volume with a more mellow tone quality. It would be good for all styles of music.

Vintage Czech, ca. 1920, from the Schoenbach region. This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-3/8".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, though it does have a lot of chips, dents, dings and scratches. Moderate to heavy wear on the edges. There are two well-repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired saddle crack on the treble side that is about 3-1/2" long, and a repaired 2-1/2 crack to the left of the fingerboard. No other cracks or repaired cracks. One corner of the top on the bass side has been chipped and is missing. This will not affect the tone or playability of the instrument. Instrument is solid and ready to play! Nice flaming on the maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume. It has a bright, clear tone quality.

Vintage American Violin/Fiddle $599

Reference No. 2632

Vintage American instrument made by the Jackson Guldane Company, probably 1940-50. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; vintage plastic chinrest; vintage ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and steel strings. Body length is 13-7/8". Overall length is 23-1/8".

This instrument is in very good condition. The entire instrument has been stripped and revarnished. Varnish job looks good. It is not overly thick, and I don't see any runs or drips. This was done a long time ago, and there has been quite a bit of play/wear to the instrument since then. Lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Mostly light wear around the edges, with one edge being a little more worn than the others. There is a varnish worn spot on the top of the instrument to the right of the chinrest where someone put their chin while playing the instrument. The only crack I see is a repaired 1/2" wing crack on the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. One rib has a small crease (See Pic 1), and another rib looks like maybe some touch-up work was done there (See Pic 2). Nicely flamed maple back and neck, finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderately bright tone quality. Nice deep tone on the G string. Great for bluegrass, folk, country or Irish music!

Does not include case or bow.

Very sweet sounding, vintage German instrument, circa 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition with lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Moderate to heavy wear around the edges. Top is medium to fine-grained spruce, and the back, neck and sides are flamed maple. Great condition for its age! Looks like it has a tiny, 1/4" saddle crack over the endblock area (repaired), and a repaired split that runs parallel to the fingerboard on one side. I would imagine this happened when the fingerboard was replaced years ago. It is solid and does not affect the stability of the instrument at all. See Pic 1. There is a scratch in the varnish on the top coming up from the bass f-hole. This looks like a crack in the picture, but it is not. I would classify this one as medium in volume with a very sweet, mellow tone quality. Very easy on the ears! Good for all styles of music as long as you don't need loud volume.

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage instrument from Klingenthal or Mittenwald, Germany ca. 1870. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and upgraded Super Sensitive Red Label steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition with lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Moderate to heavy wear around the edges. There is a chip to the top edge. See Pic 1. There is a nicely repaired 4" saddle crack on the treble side of the top. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a small wedge under the fingerboard. This one has a thicker neck, so would be better suited to someone with larger hands. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a slightly more mellow tone quality overall. Moderate in all regards. Good for any style of music! Great condition for such an old instrument!

German Stainer copy, ca. 1890. It features hybrid ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; wooden chinrest; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and upgraded Prim strings. Body length is 14-1/8". Overall length is 23-1/2".

This instrument is in very good condition. The original varnish is in good condition, but has been completely clear-coated. This is a matte finish and there are tiny shiny spots overall, especially where there are little dings. Overall, it is very nice looking! There is some chipping around the pegholes and a few places on the edges. Very little wear to the edges. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. There has been some work done to the ribs at the endblock. Looks like it was reglued at some point. There is also a dent to the ribs there. See End picture. The bridge is slightly forward on this instrument to keep the scale at 13". (This is a long-scaled instrument otherwise, though it is full size.) Nicely flamed maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud in volume, with a bright and clear tone quality. Responsive and easy to play. Good for all styles of music.

This instrument is in very good condition. The original varnish is in good condition, but looks like it may have been touched up some. There are dents, dings and scratches overall, but nothing major. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. This instrument is in fantasic condition for its age! The top is medium to wide-grained spruce, and the back, sides and neck are flamed maple. Very nice! What a great deal on a wonderful sounding E. Martin! This was made in Germany around 1890. Beautiful wood on the one-piece back! It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14-1/8", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. The original varnish is in fair condition. It looks like this instrument got hot and the varnish is crackled but not flaking. Lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Heavy wear to the edges, with some chips. There are a number of well repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired 5" saddle crack to the left of the tailpiece, a repaired 1" saddle crack to the right of the tailpiece, repaired 1/2" wing cracks on both f-holes (two on the bass f-hole), a repaired 4-1/2" crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole, a repaired 3-1/2" crack to the right of the fingerboard, a repaired 2-1/4" crack to the left of the fingerboard, a repaired 1-1/2" crack extending downwards from the bass f-hole, and another repaired 1" crack to the right of the tailpiece. There is a 3" repaired crack in the top to the right of the tailpiece. There is also a 1-1/2" repaired crack to the right of the fingerboard. Both are solid repairs. Nice, high arching on the top and back, which is indicative of Amati. Beautifully flamed, one-piece maple back! Finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this instrument as loud in volume.
