Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $25 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

Vintage American Folk Fiddle 4/4 $250
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 2009

Way cool American folk art fiddle made in 1906! One piece top! It features ebony pegs; dyed wooden fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-3/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in very good condition. Writing on the inside of the fiddle says it was made in 1906 in Simonsville, VT. The top is one piece. The entire instrument may be made from maple, but I am not sure. Look at the wood grain in the pictures and decide for yourself. Has the old, German style heel/neck where the ribs are fit into the side of the neck. Part of the neck extends over the top, and there is a small gap there to allow room for the top edge of the fiddle. It looks like part of the button was chipped off during the making of the instrument and it has been repaired. Varnish is exactly the same, so I believe this is original to the instrument when it was made. See Pic 1. Inlaid purfling is a little uneven, but not bad. There is a tiny gap in the purfling on the back. See Pic 1. Highly arched construction, with unique f-holes. Nice scroll. I see several repaired cracks in the top. This includes repaired 1" wing cracks on both f-holes; a repaired 1-1/2" saddle crack to the right of the tailpiece; and a repaired 1-1/2" crack that extends from the top edge downward to the right of the fingerboard. The back has three small repaired cracks that extend from the top edge down. All three are less than 1". See Pic 1. This is a wonderful collector's item and it is playable! I would classify this one as loud in volume with a clear, bright tone quality. This one will get you heard in any jam session! Even across all strings, and very responsive. This would be good for bluegrass and folk music!

Does not include case or bow.

Recently traded in! Beautiful tone quality! It features ebony pegs with Parisian eye; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with Parisian eye and four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition. No cracks or repaired cracks. Very few dents, dings or scratches. Top is fine grain spruce, and the back, sides and neck are lightly flamed maple. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. Nice bass end. Open tone that is clear and easy to play. Nice, overall tone that would be suitable for all styles of music!

Comes complete with used case & bow.

This is a Czech-made sample imported by Knilling. Old stock, but actually a new instrument that needed the center seam of the back reglued. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition. I see no cracks or repaired cracks; however you can see where part of the back center seam has been reglued. This is a nice looking, solid repair. Top is medium to fine grain spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a full, bright tone quality. Well rounded and suitable for all styles of music.

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $425
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 2789

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is very worn! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with heavy edge wear. There is a 1" repaired crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a crease in the ribs which would be original to the instrument when the sides were bent. See Pic 1. There is a tiny chip on one side of the scroll. See Pic 2. Please note that the striping on this instrument is not in the wood, but was done with flames (a common way of mimicking maple flaming during the time period this was made). I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. There is some warmth to the bass end, and it is fairly even across all strings. Good for bluegrass!

Does not include case & bow.

Nice student instrument, Stainer copy, made in Germany around 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 24".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is completely intact, but there is lots of wear! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with quite a bit of edge wear. There are a few chips in the scroll around a couple of the pegholes, but nothing that affects the integrity. See Scroll picture. There is a 3" repaired crack in the rib at the endblock. See End picture. Two of the corners of the top are chipped. See Pic 1. There is a 2" repaired soundpost crack in the top. See Pic 2. There is a 1" repaired crack in the rib to the right of the endblock. See End picture. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Instrument is solid and ready to play. Lightly flamed maple back, sides and scroll, and wide to fine-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a clear, bright tone quality. Good for bluegrass and Irish!

Does not include case & bow.

Beautiful tone quality and beautiful wood make this a real winner! It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and perlon strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in excellent condition. No cracks or repaired cracks. Very few dents, dings or scratches. I would guess this is only a few years old, as it has a label inside that says 2015. Top is fine grain spruce and has raised grain that can be felt, and the back, sides and neck are flamed maple. Beautiful scroll and fluted f-holes. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a wonderful, warm tone quality. Even across all strings and responsive. Easy to play! I think this would be suitable for all styles of music.

Comes complete with used case & bow.

Vintage Czech Violin/Fiddle $575
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 727

Vintage Czech, ca. 1920, from the Schoenbach region. This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-3/8".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, though it does have a lot of chips, dents, dings and scratches. Moderate to heavy wear on the edges. There are two well-repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired saddle crack on the treble side that is about 3-1/2" long, and a repaired 2-1/2 crack to the left of the fingerboard. No other cracks or repaired cracks. One corner of the top on the bass side has been chipped and is missing. This will not affect the tone or playability of the instrument. Instrument is solid and ready to play! Nice flaming on the maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume. It has a bright, clear tone quality.

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage Czech, ca. 1900-1920. Wow! This one has the tone! This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition except for the top. The top had been partially stripped, so to maintain the original tone quality, it has been french polished. If you can handle the way this one looks, you will have a wonderful sounding instrument! There is a lot of wear, dings and scratches. There is a repaired 2" saddle crack under the chinrest. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a shim under the fingerboard to correct a slightly low neck angle. See Heel Picture. Top is fine grain spruce, and the back, sides and neck are lightly flamed maple. This is one of my favorites and is priced right! Nice, deep tone quality and almost growls. Loud in volume and powerful! Even across all strings. You will fall in love with this one!

Vintage German Stainer copy, ca. 1890. This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, though it does have a lot of wear, dings and scratches. Moderate wear on the edges. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks, but some of the top and back seams have been reglued at the ribs. Great condition for the age! Nice arching! Top is a fairly even medium grain spruce, and the back, sides and neck are maple. I would classify this one as medium to medium loud in volume. Bass end is warm, with a little more brightness on the A and E strings. Warmer tone quality. This would blend well with others.

What a great deal on an amazing instrument! This was made in Germany around 1900. Amazing tone and condition! It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. The original varnish is in excellent condition, with some dents, dings and scratches overall. There are two repaired cracks in the top. One runs from the saddle right alongside the center seam of the top (under the tailpiece) and is about 4-1/2" in length. It is repaired solid, but the seams don't match up exactly so it is visible if you look under the tailpiece. There is also a repaired 1" saddle crack to the of the tailpiece. Super fine-grain spruce top with a nicely flamed maple back, sides and neck. Great sounding instrument and easy to play! I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a full, moderately bright tone quality. Even across all strings. Great depth, nice bass end, and very responsive. Great for any style of music.

Here is another great sounding instrument just waiting to be played! This was made by E. Martin in Germany, ca. 1890-1900. It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14-1/8", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. This instrument has been revarnished except for the scroll. I don't see any runs and it looks fairly even. Top is matte, with the sides and back slightly glossy. Just a few dings and scratches overall. There are two repaired cracks in the top. One runs from the saddle to the right of the tailpiece and is 1-1/2" in length. The other runs from the saddle to the right of the tailpiece and is 3" in length. It looks like the back, center seam was reglued at some point in time. There is a small piece of purfling missing in the top to the right of the fingerboard. See Pic 1. There is a 1" repaired crack in the rib at the endblock. See End picture. Instrument is solid and guaranteed ready to play. Super fine to fine-grain spruce top with a lightly flamed maple back, sides and neck. Fine-grain spruce top with a nicely flamed maple back, sides and neck. Great sounding instrument and easy to play!
